Nick James toteaa Sight & Soundin tammikuun 2009 numeron pääkirjoituksessa elokuvakriitikoilta vaadittavan nykyään useissa tapauksissa välitöntä oman mielipiteen kertomista. Hän kuitenkin muistuttaa, että kriitikon työ edellyttää aikaa miettiä ja tarvittaessa jopa katsoa elokuva uudestaan:
In the same way, film journalists, reviewers and/or critics find that instant opinions and responses are demanded of them by the insatiable need to feed blogs and other opinion sites. The paradigm of the online film journalist is someone with all the powers of the reviewer fused with those of the broadcaster. [–] As so many once-fixed boundaries disappear, it behoves critics to hold back, to retain the right to consider at leisure, and through repeat viewings, what a film may or may not reveal. We must nurture our right to a time lag; we must mind the gap.
Elokuvien näkeminen kahdesti ennen arvion kirjoittamista olisikin hienoa, mutta se on valitettavan harvoin mahdollista, ellei kriitikko satu pääsemään käymään Helsingissä lehdistönäytöksissä.
